Lessons Learned from Finishing Campus

“The next time you live like this will be when you’ve made your first million,” the old tuk tuk driver transporting my belongings from college to my new home remarked.   “Out here, you don’t vandalize property because your tap is dry or there’s a power outage.” His tone carried a hint of sadistic sarcasm, regardless of how well-meaning his unrequested guidance was.   In the past few months, I’ve been having numerous meetings with Mr. Reality. Just two weeks ago, while attending a graduation party at a friend's place, the caretaker stormed in, furious, and served a notice that completely killed the party. Only recently, while shopping at a local supermarket, I found out that the price of Unga has skyrocketed to six times what it was when I started my college four years ago. These are just a few of the harsh realities that the seemingly comfortable life in college shelters you from. It's not amusing at all.   Reality is the most grotesque monster one can face, parti...

ALCOHOLISM

Some decisions in life deserve more wisdom than straight academic knowledge. Like you may be having a friend, a relative, a father or a mother who is addicted to alcohol. That one whose body shakes as if they have malaria when they haven’t tasted it. That one who spends his/her salary in the bar, without taking care of the bills and will call all and sundry that they need a loan. That child who has been drinking, stealing cash when they are broke just to drink.
Is alcohol bad?The answer depends with your ideology, belief system and also your faith. So I won`t delve into that. And I also pray that we will come to that day when people don’t look you with funny eyes simply because you don’t drink. Or you lose a potential because you told them you don’t drink.

My view is this, anything taken in excess is bad. Anything that makes you into a danger to those around you is no more beneficial but harmful to you.Have you ever asked yourself, why you drink a lot Why you take bottles and bottles, cans after cans, glasses after glasses of alcohol and you are fine using all that cash for that? If it`s for enjoyment, that’s your life. But if you are trying to cover up something, maybe it’s time you stopped and dealt with that issue first.

What haven’t you healed from? Is it loss, is it’s a breakup, is it a feeling of unworthiness, is it hopelessness and despair, is it trauma? What are you trying to cover up with alcohol? Whatever it is, it’s only you who can answer the question.

I`m thinking about the damage that I have seen with relatives and friends who can`t spend a day without taking alcohol. I have watched them destroy their lives, and other people’s lives, those close to them in particular. I have watched how addiction costs money.

The entitlement this people have, that it’s their life and they can do whatever they want with it. That’s what they always say. But what they don’t realize is that as they drink, as they get mugged and we, as friends, leave our work to go check on them, to go pay their hospital bills since they can’t handle it, that their actions also affect us, also depress us, also makes us wonder. That’s the ripple effect dear for your actions.

I think alcoholism is the worst disaster that can happen in any family/society. It not only affects you but also your family i.e. parents who stay up late at night praying that you don’t crush in a road accident or you don’t get bitten up till you pass out or they don’t get that one phone call that you are gone. Can you imagine the number of young women out here not desiring to get married because of how they watched their dads` abuse their mothers? Do you know the number of young people socially withdrawn, emotionally detached? Did you know that the economy of the country is affected when you are not sober and can’t do any work well?

When we lose you to alcohol it’s just not your life it’s a ripple effect and it goes to all of us, those who care for you and those who don’t. If you have a problem, seek help because love is all over around you. But it starts with your will to want to quit.
